Ethiopia : Addis Ababa Authorities Arrest over 224 Eritreans

Toronto – Addis Ababa City Peace and Security Administration has reportedly arrested over 900 people in the capital Addis Ababa. The office alleges that they were on a “mission” – which it says constitute a serious security concern for the city.

224 of them are said to be Eritreans. The security officials allege that they were operating in the city with a mission from the Eritrean government.  It is not for the first time for Abiy Ahmed’s government security authorities to arrest Eritreans after relations with Eritrea deteriorated. There has been reported massive arbitrary arrest in November 2024. However, the Ethiopian government denied that there was illegal arrest.

In addition to Eritreans, 365 Ethiopians whom the administration linked to Fano forces in the Amhara region ( government calls them “extremists”)  and the remaining were linked to forces in Tigray and Oromia regions of Ethiopia. While those from Tigray region are apparently linked to the Debretsion led faction of TPLF and suspects from Oromia region are linked to “Shane.”

It was unveiled during a meeting organized to evaluate third quarter performance of the office. The meeting which was held at the meeting hall of the Mayor’s office was not open for the media, according to a Wazema Radio report.

Security officials from district level attended it.

Lidiya Girma, head of the office, reportedly briefed participants on the current security situation of Addis Ababa city.

All the suspects including Eritreans were arrested over the past two months. It is unspecified as to that type of “mission” they were working on.

Tesfaye Dendir, Deputy head of the security sector, in the office reportedly shared current security information on the city.  He is said to have described the current state of security situation in the city as “reliable.”  Yet, he also made allegations that “different groups” with “evil intention” of their own are operating in the country.

He highlighted that the arrests were made over the past two months.
